01 / OVERVIEW

Project overview.

Tunelark is an online music-learning platform connecting students with experienced music teachers for one-on-one virtual lessons. What started as a music education platform evolved into a fully online marketplace connecting students and teachers across 40+ instruments. The platform now supports the operational complexity behind online lessons, including teacher discovery, matching, scheduling, billing, student management and digital learning tools. Tunelark Adware Technologies worked with Tunelark for 1.5 years as part of the backend and DevOps team, helping develop and maintain the systems behind the platform.

02 / THE CHALLENGE

The challenge.

Running an online education marketplace is more complicated than simply connecting two users. Tunelark needed backend systems capable of handling the relationship between students, teachers, lessons, schedules and payments while keeping the experience simple for both sides of the marketplace. As the platform evolved, its backend had to support increasingly sophisticated workflows around: Tunelark's platform eventually evolved into a fully online service with automated scheduling, automated billing, student dashboards and integrated video meetings.

03 / WHAT WE DID

How Adware Technologies helped.

Adware Technologies joined the engineering effort with a focus on backend development and DevOps. We worked primarily with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, developing backend functionality and supporting the infrastructure required to operate the platform. Our work included building and improving backend features, supporting marketplace workflows, integrating external services and maintaining the systems that connected the different parts of the platform. The engagement required more than implementing individual features. The goal was to make the underlying platform reliable enough to support the day-to-day operational complexity of an online lesson marketplace. Marketplace & Scheduling One of the important parts of Tunelark's platform is coordinating lessons between students and instructors. The platform allows students to find instructors, book trial lessons and schedule ongoing lessons at recurring intervals or as needed. The backend therefore had to support the logic connecting: Student → Instructor → Availability → Lesson → Schedule → Payment This became an important part of the platform's operational infrastructure. Payments & Billing Tunelark's marketplace requires financial workflows between students, instructors and the platform. Adware worked with the backend and payment infrastructure supporting these workflows, including Stripe Connect as part of the platform's payment stack. Tunelark's current platform also operates automated billing alongside its scheduling workflows. Backend Engineering The platform was built around a Ruby on Rails backend with PostgreSQL. Adware's role focused heavily on backend development, including: The technology stack included:
